String lights, market lights, cafe lights, bistro lights — the names change by region and by vendor, but they all describe the same thing: a run of spaced bulbs hung overhead to give a space a ceiling it does not otherwise have. That is the whole reason they work. An open backyard, a courtyard or a bare tent has nothing above head height to define it, so the space feels unbounded and the light comes from the wrong direction. Running lights across the area lowers the visual ceiling, warms everything under it, and turns an outdoor space into a room. Layout is what determines whether it reads as designed or improvised, which is why we plan runs against the actual site rather than quoting a length of cable. The lighting is our own inventory, so what we quote is what we bring.
What actually matters with string lighting
The product is simple. Everything that makes it look good is in the install.
Support and layout
Runs need something to hang from — poles with weighted bases, a tent structure, or anchor points the venue permits. Where the supports land is what makes the pattern look deliberate, and it is decided on site.
Power and cable paths
Every run needs a supply and a safe route back to it. Planning that in advance is the difference between clean overhead lighting and cable taped across a walkway on the day.
Dimming and layers
Overhead string lighting sets atmosphere but does not light detail. It works best planned with uplighting and pin spotting, and brought down in level as the evening moves from dinner to dancing.
Twinkle & Fairy Light Installations
Twinkle lights and fairy lights are the finer relative of string lighting — much smaller bulbs, spaced far more densely, on thinner cable. They read as texture rather than as a light source, which is why they are used differently: woven through greenery or florals, run down a backdrop or ceiling drape, wrapped around structure, or layered above a dance floor for depth. They will not light a dinner on their own, so they are normally planned alongside overhead string lighting or uplighting rather than instead of it.
Where string lighting works
Backyard and private-estate weddings, patios and courtyards, tented receptions, rooftop events, garden dinners and outdoor corporate gatherings. Broadly, anywhere the space is open above and needs a defined, warmer ceiling — and anywhere the existing lighting is either harsh overhead light or nothing at all.

What is the difference between string lights, cafe lights and bistro lights?
Nothing meaningful — they are regional names for the same thing: a run of cable with spaced bulbs, hung overhead. Market lights and Edison lights usually describe the same product too. Twinkle or fairy lights are the finer, denser version with much smaller bulbs, used more for texture than for lighting a space.
Can string lights be hung without permanent fixings?
Usually, yes. Runs can be supported from poles with weighted bases, from a tent structure, or from existing anchor points a venue already permits. What is possible depends entirely on the site and what the venue allows, which is why we look at the space before quoting rather than assuming.
Do string lights need power at the event site?
Yes. Runs need a supply and a safe cable path back to it, which is one of the things we work out on site. Where the location has no usable power, that becomes part of the wider production conversation rather than a lighting detail.
Can they be dimmed?
Often, depending on the setup. Dimming matters more than people expect — string lighting at full output during dinner can feel flat, and the same run brought down as the night moves on is what creates the atmosphere people picture when they ask for it.
Do you own your string lighting?
Yes. String lighting is our own inventory rather than something sourced for the date, which is why we can plan a layout against your site and know exactly what is turning up. Installation and removal are handled by our own crew as well.
Do you install and remove them?
Yes. Delivery, installation and removal are part of the booking. Overhead lighting is work at height on a schedule, coordinated with the venue and with whatever else is being built in the space — it is not a drop-off rental.
Are they suitable outdoors?
Overhead string lighting is most often used outdoors — backyards, patios, courtyards, gardens and tented receptions. Weather, exposure and how the run is supported all factor into the plan for a specific site.
How much string lighting do we need?
It follows the area you want covered and the effect you want, not a fixed package. A patio dinner for forty and a full tented reception are very different runs. Tell us the space and roughly how many guests and we will propose a layout.
Can string lighting be combined with other lighting?
Yes, and it usually is. Overhead string lighting handles atmosphere; uplighting shapes the walls and structures; pin spotting picks out tables and detail. They are planned as one design so the space reads as a whole.
